SEATTLE, WA – We’re excited to share the following interview with Jocelyn Quarrell, CEO of Bold Reuse, a portfolio company of Mastersfund. Bold Reuse is making strides in sustainability by enabling businesses to eliminate single-use waste through innovative reusable packaging systems.

What is your company’s origin story?

Jocelyn Quarrell: I started my career in the sharing economy as an early employee at Zipcar and Alta Bicycle, where I launched bike-sharing systems across the country, including Citibike in NYC. In 2018, after learning of the challenges with the current recycling industry, I sought to build a company that could support upstream waste elimination and unlock additional environmental benefits, rather than hope that downstream waste management would improve.

The first iteration of the business focused on consumers who could borrow and return durable clamshells across a network of participating restaurants, cafes, and grocery stores. The pandemic impacted that model significantly but also generated opportunities to work directly with businesses to reduce waste—thus motivating Bold Reuse to pivot to a B2B business model.

What makes your company special? What’s your unique selling proposition?

Jocelyn: Bold Reuse makes it easy for businesses to eliminate single-use waste. We provide end-to-end solutions that enable brands to implement reusable packaging systems effectively, quickly, and cost-efficiently.

We handle the dirty work of washing packaging, giving our clients the same experience they’re used to with single-use options while eliminating all the waste. A key differentiator for Bold Reuse is our technology platform, which seamlessly integrates reuse tracking, reporting, and operations management. This allows businesses to easily manage their reusable systems while meeting their sustainability goals.

Our partnerships with major brands and venues—like sports teams and corporate campuses—give us proven credibility in delivering tangible, large-scale results.

If someone asked you to describe your company five years from now, what would you say to them?

Jocelyn: I envision Bold Reuse as the leading provider of reusable systems, helping businesses and communities significantly reduce their environmental footprint. We will have expanded our reach across major industries, including sports, entertainment, and corporate campuses, with seamless operations in numerous cities.

Our technology and logistics tools will be recognized as the gold standard in tracking and managing reusable systems, empowering our customers to easily adopt sustainable practices and report measurable impacts. By then, we’ll have driven significant policy changes, partnering with governments and large corporations to scale reuse infrastructure nationwide, if not globally.

Our company will be a key player in the circular economy, delivering innovative solutions that make sustainability a practical, profitable, and scalable option for all.

What are you excited about these days, and what big goals are on the near horizon for you and your company?

Jocelyn: These days, we’re excited about the speed and acceleration of our business. We’re working with incredible organizations—from the Chicago Bears to NASCAR to FIFA—and it’s thrilling to see the significant impact we’re making.

We love that even small achievements—like shaving a few seconds off our washing processes—can create massive ripple effects, such as a significant reduction in COGS. It’s proof that the details really do matter in driving efficiency and scaling sustainability.

Another thing that energizes us is the joy and excitement within our team. Watching them celebrate their wins and seeing how those individual victories collectively propel us forward is truly inspiring.

On the near horizon, we have big goals to expand into more markets and continue building partnerships with major brands and venues. We’re focused on scaling our operations while staying true to our mission of reducing waste and driving meaningful environmental change. It’s an exciting time for Bold Reuse!

Reflecting on your entrepreneurial journey, what’s the most impactful lesson you’ve learned that you’d like to share?

Jocelyn: This is a tough one, as there are so many lessons learned that are supporting our entrepreneurial journey to date. I think one key lesson for us has been to laser-focus on activities that drive value—whether for our clients or for our internal team—and to do those things really, really well.

It takes discipline to focus. There is so much trying to distract us, and it’s easy to get excited about shiny new opportunities, but keeping an eye toward direct, innovative, and nimble value generation has proved very helpful for our company.
